Teddy Jordan
I started painting furniture in 2004 using color and geometric and floral designs. I’m inspired by repetitive historical patterns – from Islamic, Chinese designs to American Folk Art and everything in between. The pieces I paint are mostly reclaimed or abandoned junk but their character remains. The furniture has good ‘bones’, great lines, interesting shapes or a high smile factor. I have found a lot of raw material in and around Asheville’s second hand stores and have single-handedly saved many pieces from landfills. It’s like going on a treasure hunt plus it’s the ultimate form of recycling.
I use acrylic paints and finish the pieces with water based poly sealer. Acrylic paints are both cheap and forgiving. If I don’t like something once I’ve painted it, I just paint over it. This makes it easy to experiment. I am not a traditional artist in the sense that I didn’t go to art school and my career was in the corporate world, but painting has provided me lots of creative pleasure.
